All about Health, Safety and Environment...

OUR Earth, Our Only Environment

The importance of taking care of the Environment can never be over emphasized.
An Environment in a very simple term can be said to be anything or premises that surrounds you and this come alongside so many features like animals, humans, cars, truck, trees, People (referred to as biodiversity) etc. The Natural state of the Environment can be altered by man’s (Our) activities which can either be of positive or negative impact on it and sooner or later on you. Therefore it is of utmost importance that you and everyone around you should be the ultimate Engineer of what they expect of their Environment

The statement "what you give is what you get" relates perfectly to People and the Environment
If we:
  • Plant trees and nurture them
  • Dispose our waste properly
  • Clean and Sanitize our Environment and drainages
  • Segregate our waste for easy separation and recycling
  • Minimize our waste and strive to optimize the use of our materials/items before disposal etc.

The environment will in turn give us:
  • Clean and fresh air
  • Conducive/Healthy Environment
  • Fertile soil and in turn healthy crops for our consumption
  • And most importantly we continue to exist, our generation to come will be assured of their existence (update on WED, Themed "sustainable production and consumption" coming"

But if we do not:
  • Dispose our waste properly
  • Clean and sanitize our drainages and surroundings
  • Mow our lawns and cut down your grass as at when due
  • Avoid waste and even burning them
  • Practice Sustainability

Then don't be too surprised when you get:
Flooding, contaminated air, ozone layer depletion resulting to global warming, Green House Effect and acid rain, Frequent ill health and all (read our last article for recent natural disaster), Extinction (Do you want to become history?)

This year's WED (World Environmental Day) on the 5th of June, 2015 dwelled more on this. Ensure you do all you can to keep your temporary and consistent Environment clean and habitable for you, everyone and other species around you.

Always remember that first you need to avoid waste, if you can't then apply the 5Rs of caring for your Environment which are Reduce, Recover Residue, Reuse, and Recycle and finally treat then dispose properly, apply these in your daily activities.

Update on WED article soon!!!

Recent Toll on the Environment

Before my next post I want you to quickly scale through recent disasters to show you the importance of what we are talking about. you might feel ah that does not concern me, it is not happening in my Country and it would not, well my dear if you continue treating the Environment the way you do then it is coming to you sooner than you think. OK let me not get carried away lest we divert. let us take a look at the disasters and the effect on the people:

People under the scotching sun photo by Altaf Qadri

  • well the first is the recent heat wave in India presently ongoing reported to have killed 1,100 people in less than a week "yea you read that right, people not animals" God and according to CNN the worst part hit is the Southeastern state of Andhra Pradesh where authorities say 852 people have died in the heat wave followed with 266 in a neighboring state of Telangana.
Now who are the set of people who have been reported to have been hit the most, they are the poorer ones like the beggars, homeless and labourers of which Construction workers is said to have the larger chunk so far because they cannot abandon their jobs, they still have to survive even in the blistering heat according to CNN correspondent Malika Kapur.

Now let us be sincere with ourselves, who are the set of people with the lowest regards for the Environment...

Others are Texas and oklahoma flood which has resulted in the death of 6 people and 12 others missing, The Houston hard torrential rain on Tuesday which has been reported to have killed 19 people et al all this among other disaster we can not lay our hands on now. You can share your experience with us if any.

well I will leave that to you, the next time you decide to treat the Environment like you can do without it just remember that when the outcome of your actions reveals its ugly head it is going to hit you the hardest.

Now what can you do to avoid this-read our next post

World Safety and Health Day

World Safety and Health Day is an annual international campaign to promote safe, healthy and decent work. It is held on 28 April and has been observed by the International Labour Organization (ILO) since 2003.
28 April has also long been associated with the world's trade union movement's commemoration of the victims of occupational accidents and diseases.
Every year some two million men and women lose their lives through accidents and diseases linked to their work. In addition, there are 270 million occupational accidents and 160 million occupational diseases each year, incurring US$ 2.8 trillion in costs for lost working time and expenses for treatment, compensation and rehabilitation. Fatalities, accidents and illness at work are highly preventable and we have an obligation to act.
A national occupational safety and health culture is one in which the right to a safe and healthy working environment is respected at all levels, where governments, employers and workers actively participate in securing a safe and healthy working environment through a system of defined rights, responsibilities and duties, and where the highest priority is accorded to the principle of prevention.

From: WWW.UN.org

This year's theme is "Join in Building a Culture of prevention on occupational Safety and Health"

In simple terms this is just calling on all stakeholders, employers, executives, employees, HODs, Managers etc. to join the van of proactively acting towards preventing occupational accidents, injury, illness and even death and reducing it to its barest minimum

Look foreward to articles on why this is necessary and how it can be practiced.

Everyone everywhere needs safety, educate the people around you by sharing this and send your feedback please.

"Invest in the futur: Defeat malaria"

World Malaria Day was established in 2007 during the 60th session of world Health Assembly. Every April 25,
to celebrate world malaria day individuals, organizations, Governments etc. are expected to review their efforts and contributions to the fight against malaria so far, as well as educate people in their circle and those they are responsible for.

  • Statistics have shown that nearly half of the world's population is at risk of the disease
  • And it kills half a million each year
  • Some people do not show sign or symptoms of this disease
  • Drug resistance has been a serious challenge in treating malaria (avoid self medication)

Proactive actions Includes:

Keeping the environment tidy (is it a coincidence that Malaria Day is a Day after World Earth Day?).
  • Ensuring our drainage is well kempt
  • Taking adequate care of our lawns and gardens, ensuring they don't over grow
  • Fumigating our home and surroundings as applicable to our environment (make sure you do not inhale chemicals in the process)
